He

He is three weeks old today.
This is his favorite place to sleep, up against mommy's chest.
He has been very fussy.
He has had mommy call the doctor several times. (good thing the doctor is so kind and knows mommy well.)
He loves music and enjoys hearing someone sing to him.
He has yet to stay slepping in his crib. He wakes up as soon as we lay him down.
He is scheduled for an upper GI tomorrow to see if his problems are due to reflux.
He has gone on several late night truck rides with mommy and daddy to help stop the crying and finds it does help.
He doesn't mind a bath so much when Kyle has just taken a shower and has the bathroom a good 80 degrees.
He now weighs 9 lbs. 1oz.
His family is absolutely in love with him and can't imagine life without him.
Mommy is cherishing every minute with him.

Now We Are Five

We finally got a family picture together on Friday night. Kenton kept teasing me because I said I wanted a picture of the four of us together, when I really meant the five of us.
It had been just the four of us for so long. I had wanted one in the hospital but since Kyle got sick we were unable to get one then. We are all doing well. Kenton and I are tired as Baby Kaleb, we believe has colic. We are so in love with him though and we feel so blessed to have him. Keeping my post short. We also got some newborn pictures taken of him by a gal in Maryville. Hope to have them soon.

Welcome Baby Kaleb David Johnson

As many of you know, our new little baby boy arrived on June 2, 2010. Kaleb David Johnson entered our lives at 1:31 p.m. It was a beautiful day and we are all feeling so blessed. It was a day I will never forget and will cherish each and every moment of it. As many of you might have heard our week continued to be a whirlwind as Kyle got sick with pneumonia and had to be admitted to the hospital on the day after Kaleb's birth. We are all home now and doing fine. I will probably not post for a while. Just wanting to cherish every moment with family and our new little boy. I am thanking God for my children and for such a wonderful husband who has taken such good care of all of us this past week. Once things settle down I will try to post.

Happy Birthday!

Kyle turned 15 yesterday. We had a busy day with work, school, and planting our garden but we still found time to celebrate. Kyle couldn't wait to light his own candles on his cake. All is going well for him. He is healthy and happy. He requested a new fishing pole to add to his collection of several and some Itune gift cards ( typical teenager). Happy Birthday Kyle!

Spring

Although the weather has again put a cold damper on things, spring is doing best to make her appearance at our farm. As many of you know, Kenton's sister and her family own and operate Rainbow Iris Farm. They have been busy working on the farm as Bloomfest soon approaches later this month. This is a great year for irises and many of mine our blooming at present. I was so excited to see them brighten up our garden. I have gotten all of them from Rainbow Iris Farm.

We have been busy continuing to get ready and look forward to Baby Boy Johnson, planting garden, camping and all of the wonderful things this summer has to offer. I am feeling so lucky and thankful today that we are all together living on such a beautiful farm.

Weekend Full of Birthdays and Prom 2010

What a busy weekend. Saturday my baby girl turned 17. It was also Prom 2010. We spent most of the day in preparation with hair and nails and such. She looked beautiful! I think she had a good birthday also. Not often that you get to get so dressed up on your birthday.

Today, the 25th, was Kenton's birthday. We are putting off our Birthday dinners with Kenton's family until another weekend. We knew Jessica would be too tired for company tonight.
Happy Birthday to both Jess and Kenton!

National Organ Donation Month

This post is long overdue. April is National Organ Donation Month, and I want to spend some time telling you a little about Kyle's heart donor and encouraging everyone to sign up to be an organ donor.

It has now been 16 months since Kyle received his new heart. Our lives are back to what I guess you could call normal. Kyle is in the best health he has ever been in. Taking medication and the extra precautions to keep him healthy have now become part of our daily routine. He has adjusted so well and is thriving. I still think back to those days in St. Louis and I am sure the memories will never leave me. I don't like to think about it but still sometimes when it is quiet I reflect back on those times. Kyle's question, " am I going to die?" still haunts me. But thanks to a stranger's unselfish act of kindness in their moments of deep sorrow, Kyle was given a second chance. I will forever be grateful.

I wrote Kyle's donor family back in December when his one year anniversary approached. The next month I heard back from them. Writing to them was hard, receiving their letter was just as hard. We now had a story and pictures of Kyle's donor. It truly made it real. They have asked us to keep in touch with them and I have made a goal to get a letter sent back to them this month, in honor of National Organ Donation Month.

I will not show Kyle's donor's picture or go into great details as I have not asked her family's consent but I do want to tell you some about the young woman who saved Kyle's life.

She was 24 years old. We do not know where she was from but I have a good idea. Her mother wrote the letter to us telling us about their daughter. Kyle's donor had been born with an illness
she had from birth. Like Kyle she had frequent doctor visits, surgeries etc. throughout her life.
She was required constant care by her parents.

Coincidentally about the time we went to St. Louis to get Kyle evaluated in October 2008 and found out he needed a heart transplant, their daughter's health began to deteriorate and she was back in the hospital. According to her mother she was declared brain dead on Dec. 3rd. It was that night that the mother and father talked and even before anyone came to ask them, they asked if their daughter could be an organ donor. This amazed me that they thought to do this. The mother went on to tell me the amount of testing that her daughter's body went through the next day, while at the same time Kyle was in the hospital in St. Louis going through preparation and testing. It must have been so hard for them.

From the family's letter it was apparent that she was a very special girl and they loved her very much. She brought them so much joy and despite her illness was very strong willed. I can not imagine their pain and how much they must miss her. I will never take lightly the wonderful gift they gave.

It has given me some peace in that it was their choice to donate their daughter's organs, even before anyone asked, and I know they knew what a difference they could make in another person's life. They knew the suffering from frequent hospital stays, watching your child suffer, the countless doctor's visits, blood draws, horrible hospital food and sleepless nights in hard back chairs watching over your child. They knew they could save another child and family from those horrible things. Kyle's donor was someone you would have never expected to be an organ donor. Yet her parents helped her become a hero. Her heart was a good one. Her mother told me that she knew that it was. At Kyle's last cardiac cath the doctor told me "it really looks like he has the heart of an athlete". That doctor knew nothing about Kyle's donor.

Do not think that you can not be a donor because you have "this or that" ailment. Yes, many times certain diseases will limit what organs or tissue can be donated. But if Kyle's donor's parents had thought that because of her illness she couldn't be a donor, Kyle might not be here today. Talk about organ donation with your family and loved ones, sign your driver's license or become a registered donor. So many lives can be saved.
